U.S. President Donald Trump has said the United States will continue negotiations with Iran but has declared that the ceasefire between the two countries is no longer in effect.
In a post on social media, Trump wrote:
“The Islamic Republic of Iran has asked us to continue talks. We have agreed to do so, but the United States has made it very clear that the ceasefire is OVER.”
His remarks come after U.S. forces carried out strikes on several locations in southern Iran following attacks on commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important maritime oil routes.
Washington and Tehran have blamed each other for the collapse of the ceasefire agreement. Iranian officials have maintained that the country reserves the right to respond to any attacks targeting its territory or infrastructure.
Meanwhile, the number of oil tankers passing through the Strait of Hormuz declined on Friday following the latest exchange of attacks and escalating dispute over control and security of the strategic waterway. The renewed tensions have raised fresh concerns about global oil supplies and the safety of international shipping, contributing to higher energy prices.
The latest developments underscore the fragility of previous efforts to halt hostilities, even as U.S. and Iranian officials continue diplomatic discussions in search of a more permanent agreemen.
