Doctors have warned that the use of skin-lightening products can lead to severe health complications, including kidney damage, nervous system disorders, thinning of the skin, and permanent changes in skin pigmentation.
Dr. Gacheri Kathiri, a dermatologist at Meru Teaching and Referral Hospital, says many products used to lighten the skin contain harmful chemicals such as mercury, which can cause irreversible health damage.
According to Dr. Kathiri, long-term use of these products may result in severe acne, cracked skin, recurring infections, high blood pressure, diabetes, and kidney disease. She also cautioned that advertisements portraying lighter skin as the standard of beauty often mislead young people into using such products without professional medical advice.
Her warning is echoed in the story of Anne Desdemona, 27, who became addicted to skin-lightening products after believing they would make her more attractive. For more than a year, she spent over KSh10,000 every month on creams, soaps, and oils marketed as products that would give her lighter, smoother skin.
Instead of gaining confidence, Anne developed painful pimples, cracked skin between her fingers, rashes on her thighs, and constant anxiety that people would discover she was bleaching her skin. She said that whenever she stopped using the products for a few weeks, her skin began returning to its natural tone, prompting her to continue using them.
Her journey to recovery began after a conversation with her 14-year-old niece. Anne warned the teenager against using skin-lightening products because they were dangerous. Her niece responded with a question that changed everything:
“If they’re harmful, why are you using them?”
The question made Anne reflect on her choices. With the support of a dermatologist, she gradually stopped using the products. Today, she says she has learned that true beauty is not determined by skin colour, but by healthy skin and self-confidence.
