The Journalism Club at Kairi Boys High School in Gatundu North, Kiambu County, is playing a vital role in nurturing students’ academic growth and talents while opening doors to careers in language, communication, and the media.
In addition to developing students’ skills in various forms of creative arts, the club inspires members to pursue careers in teaching, translation, photography, and the editing of books, videos, and films.
The club also seeks to strengthen students’ proficiency in Kiswahili and English, equipping them with the confidence and ability to communicate effectively in both spoken and written forms.
Members meet after afternoon classes to discuss strategies for strengthening the club and expanding its activities.
Among its future plans are the establishment of a drama section and the launch of the school’s official magazine next year, providing students with a platform to showcase their creativity in writing and other artistic fields.
The club’s impact is already evident.
Students who actively participate in its activities have consistently performed well in Kiswahili and English examinations while demonstrating greater confidence in public speaking and other school activities.
The club’s patron, Doreen Kathurima, says the initiative has made a significant contribution to students’ personal and academic development.
“Beyond supporting the Language Department, the club promotes discipline and helps improve KCSE performance. We have also witnessed remarkable progress in public speaking, poetry writing, and news presentation among our members,” she said.
The school’s principal, Anthony Mwaria, believes the club prepares students for future careers.
“This club inspires students to pursue journalism and other language-related professions. It also nurtures them into innovative researchers and writers who can compete on the global stage,” he said.
The Head of the Guidance and Counselling Department, Norah Biyaki, emphasized that discipline and commitment are essential to the club’s success.
“We encourage students to embrace a strong learning culture, maintain high standards of discipline, and remain dedicated so they can fully benefit from the opportunities the club provides,” she said, a sentiment echoed by Deputy Principal Michael Ngari.
Through its diverse activities, the Kairi Boys High School Journalism Club continues to shape students into the journalists, leaders, and creative professionals of tomorrow.
