John Nzenze was a legendary Kenyan guitarist and musician widely known for popularising the “twist” music style in Kenya.
He was born in 1940 in Muthurwa, Nairobi (then British East Africa). From a young age, he developed a strong interest in music, especially after being exposed to his father’s guitar. He later grew up between Nairobi and western Kenya, where he continued nurturing his musical talent.
After leaving school early, he worked at the Norfolk Hotel in Nairobi. It was there that he met fellow musician Daudi Kabaka, and together they began recording early hit songs that helped shape modern Kenyan popular music.
One of his biggest breakthroughs came with his 1961 hit song “Angelike,” which made him a household name. He later became famous for songs such as “Julieta Rudi Tuone” and “Habari za Nairobi (Nairobi Twist).”
At the height of his career, Nzenze formed the Air Fiesta Matata Band, which featured musicians from Kenya and Congo. The group gained international recognition and toured several countries, including the UK, USA, Germany, and Japan. They also performed at major international festivals and were widely respected across Africa.
In 1971, his band was recognized by the BBC World Service as one of the best in Africa, further boosting his reputation as a pioneer of East African music.
Beyond performing, he also worked as a producer and continued to play music for many years, even after the peak of his fame. He received national recognition, including a Head of State Commendation in 2009 for his contribution to Kenyan music.
John Nzenze passed away on 30 May 2020 in Kakamega, Kenya, at the age of 80.
He is remembered as one of the pioneers of Kenyan popular music and a key figure in shaping the country’s musical identity.
