The Israeli military has said it is investigating a photo circulated on social media showing a soldier smoking while placing another cigarette in the mouth of a famous statue in Lebanon. The monument was dedicated in honor of Mary, the mother of Prophet Jesus.

The incident is alleged to have taken place in the village of Debel in southern Lebanon, where last month another Israeli soldier was photographed striking a different statue with a sledgehammer.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said the latest photo was taken several weeks ago and described the act as “completely contrary to the values expected of its soldiers.”

In the earlier sledgehammer incident, the soldier involved and another soldier who recorded the act were sentenced to 30 days in military prison following international condemnation over the incident.
