Team Kenya made a strong start at the African Wrestling Championships in Alexandria on Monday, winning four medals on the opening day.
The team secured one silver and three bronze medals, signaling a promising beginning to the competition, which runs until May 2.
Jemimmah Nakhumicha won silver in the 65kg category.
Three other athletes claimed bronze medals: Joy Lichuma (57kg), Shaline Joy (49kg), and Sophia Nancy (73kg).
Kenya Amateur Wrestling Association (KAWA) Secretary General, Eric Walucho, praised the team, saying the achievement reflects the sport’s growth in the country.
He described the results as good news for the wrestling community and thanked God for the success.
He also commended Galfin Wangila for his effort in the Greco-Roman 60kg category, saying, “he performed very well, congratulations.”
Nakhumicha and Lichuma showed consistency by competing in the same weight categories as last year.
Shaline Joy moved up from 45kg to 49kg and still performed strongly, while Sophia Nancy made an impressive debut at the African Championships by winning a medal.
Kenyan athletes scheduled to compete included Janet Ingwesi (69kg) in the women’s cadet category.
On the men’s side, representatives include Calvin Nyatuka (65kg), Clinton Omari (51kg), Vincent Waweru (70kg), and Dan Kegode (60kg).
Kenya is aiming to continue its medal-winning momentum as the championships progress.
